It simply does not get more Icelandic than this. At any time of year, you can step into the saddle on one of the sturdy but friendly horses in the fishing town of Þorlákshöfn in south Iceland. The Icelandic horse is world-famous for its good temperament along with its five gaits: the walk, the trot, the canter, the tölt, and the flying pace. From Þorlákshöfn (Thorlak’s Harbour) you will ride west, towards the beautiful lava fields of Krýsuvík. Krýsuvík is also famous for its geothermal activity (not surprisingly in amongst all the lava), so you’ll see some white strokes of steam rising from the ground in the distance. You might also see some impressive views of both mountains and the sea. The lava fields are a truly alien landscape, so not that surprising that they were used as one of NASA’s locations for their astronauts’ training before going to walk on the moon. There is very little vegetation here, and the most prominent colour of the landscape is black. You will also visit a small church, Strandakirkja, that’s well known in Iceland. This is a protestant church from the 12th century, with beautiful views towards the ocean, and you’ll be sure to see some impressive waves crashing on the cliffs nearby, especially on windy days. Close by is a small café where you, and the horses, can have a little rest and have some snacks. Then it’s time to return to base. This tour is four hours long and only intended for experienced riders as it is of medium difficulty. Enjoy a ride through beautiful Icelandic nature. Check availability by choosing a date.
